King Penguins are the second largest penguin and can easily be identified by their golden orange ear patch on its black head, orange yellow breast, silvery great upper parts, and pink bill stripe. They are stunning to photograph, especially when droplets of snow dotted their feathers on this blustery March day.King penguins are one of only two penguin species that do not build nests. They also are very social creatures. King penguins incorporate movements and behaviors into courtship rituals. Males will produce trumpeting calls and stretch to their maximum height to attract mates. Once a female accepts, the two will stand facing each other and engage in stretching, calling,and bobbing.
Right Whale Bay was named in 1922 after the whale species that got its name from the whalers who considered it the “right whale to kill.” It is yet another stunning place in South Georgia: home to a king penguin colony, fur seals, elephant seals, and a waterfall that adds to the fantastic scenery.
